Moving a forklift takes more planning than moving a car. These machines are heavy, top-heavy and don't always roll freely. Whether you are relocating a warehouse, buying a used machine or sending one out for repair, this checklist helps the move go safely.
Gather the details before you call
The more we know up front, the better we can plan. Have this ready:
- Make and model
- Approximate weight (often on the data plate)
- Tire type: cushion (warehouse) or pneumatic (yard)
- Mast height when lowered
- Whether it runs and drives
- Pickup and drop-off addresses, plus any dock or gate hours
Prepare the machine
- Lower the forks all the way and tilt the mast back.
- Remove attachments if you can, or tell us they will stay on.
- Secure loose items such as seat cushions, manuals and propane tanks. In most cases propane tanks should be removed and shipped separately.
- Check for leaks so hydraulic fluid doesn't spill on the truck bed or the road.
- Have the key ready for the driver if the machine runs.
Prepare the site
Our rollback needs a clear, fairly level area to tilt the bed and load. Make sure the path from the forklift to the truck is clear of pallets, racking and parked cars. If the machine is inside a building, let us know about doorway heights and any ramps or slopes.
Non-running forklifts
A forklift that won't run can still be moved. We winch it onto the bed, but that takes more setup, so tell us ahead of time. If the brakes are locked or the tires are flat, mention that too.
